You Provide the Tools to Mend Tiny Hearts
Thanks to the generosity of donors, The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio continues to expand its programs and services to meet the needs of children and families across South Texas and beyond. The Max and Minnie Tomerlin Voelker Fund, which has demonstrated more than a decade of support for The Children’s Hospital, recently funded the renovation of a cardiac catheterization laboratory (cath lab) for The Children’s Hospital’s heart program. This cath lab complements the renovation of several spaces that are essential to the heart program, and together, with the new MRI suite, a second cath lab, patient exam rooms, and new nursing stations, The Children’s Hospital is able to provide the highest quality, comprehensive cardiac care to every child.
“Our heart program is staffed by an exceptionally talented team of cardiologists and cardiothoracic surgeons and serves children with a variety of needs in a state-of-the-art clinic and procedural suites, thanks to our donors,” said Dr. Harinder Singh, chief of pediatric cardiology at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. “With our academic partner, Baylor College of Medicine, the children’s heart program has a 13-member team, 10 of whom are cardiologists or cardiovascular surgeons. Our heart program is the best place for children facing the most serious heart conditions and is often the only option for many children.”

The team is an integrated group of specialists in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, fetal echocardiography, anesthesiology, perfusion, and neonatal and pediatric intensive care, who use a multidisciplinary approach to provide individualized care for each patient. All care providers work together, in genuine collaboration, to achieve outstanding results for our children. The 1,500-square-foot cath lab helps meet an essential need for the maternal and fetal health program, and the neonatal and congenital heart program, by creating a dedicated space for diagnostic and surgical procedures.
“Our donors allow us to continue our commitment to providing the best care for mothers and children seeking cardiac treatment throughout the San Antonio community and beyond. This investment will have an impact beyond measure,” Dr. Singh added.
The Max and Minnie Tomerlin Voelker Fund has generously donated more than $4 million over the last decade to fund several programs and services in addition to the cath lab, including a cancer survivor program, cardiology, equipment, pediatric trauma, child life, and The Max and Minnie Tomerlin Voelker Research Center at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.
“When we positively change the health of even one child, we create ripple effects felt by our communities for years to come,” said Dr. Singh. “And our donors help us do just that.”
