The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is dedicated to providing high-quality, comprehensive care to children with heart problems.
An integrated group of specialists in cardiology, cardiovascular surgery, fetal echocardiography, anesthesiology, perfusion, and neonatal and pediatric intensive care, uses a multidisciplinary approach to specifically care for each patient. All care providers work together, in genuine collaboration, to achieve outstanding results for our children.
“We are dedicated to providing compassionate, multidisciplinary care for our patients and their families,” said Dr. M. Ali Mumtaz, section chief, cardiothoracic surgery at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. “Our team of specialists share this unique vision, and we always make ourselves readily available to meet the needs of the families and patients we serve.”
These skilled teams of medical professionals work to treat patients through hospitalization and beyond.

“We have recruited extraordinary, talented specialists from around the country,” said Elias Neujahr, president of The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. “These physicians are highly coveted across the country. They are renowned experts who are choosing to come here because they want to make a profound difference.”
At The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, many heart conditions are now treated with state-of-the-art, modern techniques. These include some heart defects traditionally treated with open heart surgery. They are now treated with advanced, minimally invasive surgical approach or percutaneous therapy in the cath lab, avoiding surgery altogether.
“It is important for us to provide world-class care to every patient we see,” said Dr. Richard Lorber, section chief, cardiology at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. “Some of the specialized services we provide include a cardiac catheterization lab specifically designed for children, interventional cardiology including interventional and diagnostic catheterizations, a cardiac ECHO lab, non-invasive imaging capabilities, etc.”
Over the past three years, there has been tremendous growth within the heart program. In order to continue to provide the highest quality of care, The Children’s Hospital has created plans for a new Heart Center to be constructed.
“Our vision is to create one integrated space where our cardiac specialists can deliver exceptional care,” said Clint Kotal, vice presidents, ambulatory services at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. “This new space will allow all of the programs to be located adjacent to one another, permitting seamless patient flow from room to room and ultimately making the experience more comfortable and convenient for the families we serve. This upgrade will also provide new cardiology equipment, diagnostic space, team conference space, outpatient clinic space, and more.”
The vision of this new, renovated Heart Center is only made possible through the generosity and support of our dedicated partners and donors.
“A successful heart program is a staple for dedicated freestanding children’s hospitals around the country,” Clint added. “Because of the strong investment we have made in our cardiology department, we are able to touch a remarkable number of lives throughout our city and beyond.”
