Years of support create a lasting impact.
If there is anything we have learned from this past year, it is to seek gratitude each and every day. The smallest gestures can have the greatest impact on our friends, family, neighbors, and even complete strangers. As we all selflessly protected one another by staying home, we also said goodbye to four incredible life-long donors and board members.
James (Jim) Ward Gorman, Jr. passed away in October of this past year, peacefully at his family home in San Antonio. Jim was an Honorary Life Member of The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation Board and Trustee Emeritus of the Endowment Boards. Jim received many accolades throughout his life and it was evident he loved and believed in giving back to the community in which he lived.
Over the years, Jim and the Gorman Foundation gave over $3.5 million to The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Most recently, they were lead donors in the Putting Children First campaign and established the Rowena C. Gorman Endowed Chair in Pediatric Cardiac Surgery. Jim’s legacy will continue to reach and help so many in need.

Timothy (Tim) Frank Haegelin passed away in late October 2020 at the age of 76. Tim retired from his role as President/ CEO of Generations Credit Union in 2013. One of his proudest legacies is the non-profit he co-founded in 1986, Credit Unions for Kids, which has raised more than $100 million for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals across the country.
Tim’s commitment to raising funds for Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals has helped countless families across the United States. Credit Unions for Kids remains a pillar of philanthropy in our community.
Richard (Dick) Thomas Brady passed away in November 2020 at the age of 90. Dick served as the Children’s Miracle Network Telethon Chairman from 1985 to 1987. He served as a board member on The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation Board, as well as a part of many other organizations in Texas in which he took great pride in being a part of.
Dick was not only a donor to The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, he was also a connector. He helped secure the initial $1 million donation for the Sister Angela Clare Moran Endowed Chair in Pediatrics. Dick’s contributions and efforts have helped pave the way for The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio establishing the highest quality of care.
We also lost Charles (Chuck) T. Hutzler in December. Chuck had a passion for volunteering.
While working at USAA in the marketing department, Chuck was recruited by Colonel Ted Michel, to get involved
with a direct mail program at The Children’s Hospital as well as the newly formed Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals Telethon in 1984. Chuck willingly became involved and began serving as operations chairman of the local Telethon for almost 25 years. In addition, he served as liaison with the Children’s Hospital Trail Ride and participated in their annual trail ride, BBQ cook off, and team roping event. He joined The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Foundation Board in 1979. We are forever grateful for Chuck’s tireless contributions to The Children’s Hospital.
Thank you to these four incredible philanthropists who have contributed greatly to creating a space of healing for our children and their families. We are forever grateful for their strength and compassion towards our mission.
