Now through June 2, participating Circle K locations across the San Antonio area will ask customers to make a donation or round-up the change from their purchase to help change kids’ health and change the future.
Children’s hospitals are on the frontlines when it comes to protecting the health of future generations, but we can’t do it alone. That’s where CMN Hospitals’ partnership with Circle K comes in; it makes giving easy. Each time a customer chooses to donate to their local CMN hospital, it adds up to make a big impact, creating a ripple effect in our community and our world for years to come. Here at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, we are providing best-in-class care for children and their families. You can choose to purchase a Miracle Balloon or donate any amount. All donations stay local and help heal kids like Katherine and her mom, Anna.
At Anna’s 20-week sonogram, her physician noticed the baby was much smaller than she should be. Anna and her husband chose to travel from San Angelo to San Antonio to meet with Dr. Richard Wagner, chief of clinical operations for the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. After a few tests, Dr. Wagner asked Anna to stay overnight just as a precaution. The next morning during a sonogram, Dr. Wagner noticed the baby had developed a pericardial effusion, an excess of fluid between the heart and the sack surrounding the heart. Anna was at risk of pre-eclampsia and would have to deliver via cesarean section (c-section). Katherine Grace was born at 25 weeks, weighing just 11 ounces (340 grams). She is the 63rd smallest survivor, according the University of Iowa Tiny Baby Registry, a worldwide registry.
Although Katherine was 1/10th the weight of an average 7.5-pound newborn, she had no life-threatening health issues as doctors had previously anticipated. After five months in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, baby Katherine went home to grow up alongside her big brother, Jackson. Katherine turned three-years-old today (May 7) and she is just as spunky and sweet as ever!
Next time you’re in Circle K and are asked to donate, remember Katherine, and other kids like her, that are counting on your support. And be sure to thank our friends at Circle K for their continued support of CMN Hospitals.
