A Healing Place for Children – Center for Miracles

Your Support Leads to Brighter Futures

Keeping a child in the best health–body, mind, and spirit–is a very special job. No one knows this better than the skilled and caring specialists in the Center for Miracles at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio. Since 2006, when the Center for Miracles was established, the team has placed a focused effort on addressing the issues of child abuse and neglect.

“Our child protection team works strictly on referrals to provide comprehensive medical and psychosocial evaluation of children who come to our Center,” said Tim Reznicek, Center for Miracles clinic manager. “We provide coordinated assessments for suspected child maltreatment, x-rays, lab work, short-term trauma-based counseling, inpatient consultations, and more. It’s an invaluable service to the community.”

Because of donors like you, children and their families have access to physicians when they need them most.

Specialists in the Center for Miracles work with children from across Bexar County and South Texas up to 18 years old, who have been victims of abuse or neglect. Areas of abuse may include physical, emotional, or sexual.

“We create an atmosphere committed to supporting both the child and the family, providing highly specialized care in a warm, personal environment,” Reznicek added. “We dedicate all of our energy–mental, physical, and spiritual–to restoring our patients’ health and peace. We help any child regardless of the type or level of abuse or neglect experienced or their family’s financial capacity.”

Every day, an average of ten children seek care and treatment through the Center for Miracles. Of the approximately 300 children served each month, one third come directly to the Center as a referral from a local agency or through medical care received at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio’s H-E-B Emergency Department.  The Center for Miracles’ team consults with other agencies and hospitals to treat an additional 200 patients per month.

The Center for Miracles is a collaboration of The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, the Department of Pediatrics at The University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and community agencies and individuals. The program was made possible by the generosity of Goldsbury Foundation and continues today with ongoing support provided from the community, hospital funding, and state granting agencies.

The Children’s Hospital most recently received a grant from the John G. and Marie Stella Kenedy Memorial Foundation in the amount of $15,000 to support the clinic operations of the Center for Miracles. In thanking the Kenedy Memorial Foundation and accepting the grant, John Bel, president of The Children’s Hospital Foundation said, “Each day, children in our region come to The Children’s Hospital and the Center for Miracles to start their recovery from abuse or neglect. Your partnership with us for this important program is a light to children and families in our care.”

“We will continue to seek philanthropic partners for this important program,” Reznicek said. “Until there are no children who need us, our program will continue, regardless of profitability, because our children deserve it.”
