CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Medical Center Unveils New Oncology Unit

On September 29, CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Hospital – Medical Center (CSRH-MC) held a virtual ribbon cutting in honor of the brand new, state-of-the-art oncology unit that will provide people across San Antonio and South Texas access to exceptional cancer care close to home.

Dr. Ian Thompson Jr., president of CSRH-MC, kicked off the virtual festivities by thanking hospital and foundation leadership, Associates, and most importantly, the donors who have made the oncology unit possible. Sister Michele O’Brien delivered remarks touching on 151 years of healing, as well as a beautiful reflection on the significance of grace in healthcare. The halls were then blessed, and Madelon Leone, chair of the Friends Foundation, concluded the virtual ribbon cutting by sharing the story of how the oncology unit was archived.

The new 11,200-square-foot medical care space includes 19 private patient rooms, ultra-modern nursing and physician workstations, a more tranquil infusion room, and a comfortable family waiting area. The dedicated adult oncology unit provides both inpatient and outpatient services for patients all along the cancer journey. This care is delivered by a multidisciplinary team of oncologists, hospitalists, registered nurses and nursing assistants, dieticians, social workers, physical therapists, and chaplains.

“Seeing a project like this come to fruition just doesn’t materialize overnight. It takes a great deal of support and commitment from our community. We are so thankful to be able to evolve and grow in how we are able to provide medical care to everyone we serve,” said Dean Alexander, president and CEO of CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Health System. “This community needed an inpatient oncology medical care unit. We are so happy to be the first to provide such a place.”
