It had only been six months since April Weaver’s last mammogram, but when her employer, HD Supply, hosted the CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Mobile Mammography Unit (MMU) on site, she decided to go ahead and get a mammogram. The MMU provides 2-D mammograms and the possibility of a cure through early detection of breast cancer.
A few days later, April received a call from the MMU team notifying her they found something on her scans and they would be sending them over to her primary doctor for review. April was diagnosed in June of 2019 with Stage 1 ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS), which means the cells that line the milk duct of the breast have become cancer, but they have not spread into surrounding breast tissue, and a very small amount of invasive ductal carcinoma spread outside the duct.
April underwent a lumpectomy and partial mastectomy on her right breast in August with 21 rounds of radiation, but luckily no chemotherapy was necessary. Doctors informed April that they had removed the cancer with the surgeries and she began her journey as a breast cancer survivor.
Thanks to HD Supply hosting the MMU on their work site, around 45 employees were able to receive a mammogram while at work.
“I am so incredibly thankful for the MMU and to my employer. I would probably would not have known I had cancer if it wasn’t for this incredible service,” said April.
April recently celebrated one year of clear scans since her diagnosis date and continues to be an advocate for the mobile mammography unit.

April added, “My advice to women everywhere is to not be afraid to find something out. Finding out sooner rather than later saved my life. I’m a survivor.”
The CHRISTUS Santa Rosa Mobile Mammography Unit keeps a very busy schedule, bringing critical diagnostic services to women throughout San Antonio, New Braunfels, and South Central Texas.
