Excellence in Health Care for Our Children

Your generosity helps The Children’s Hospital reach milestones

Award-winning medical teams at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio strive to provide the best care for patients and families who come to us for life-saving care. In 2018, The Children’s Hospital earned several prestigious designations and recognitions for excellence, proving that its unmatched, high-quality health care for children continues to flourish.

Magnet® Designation

The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio officially earned its Magnet® designation from the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) in July 2018. Magnet is the highest and most prestigious designation a health care organization can achieve, based on nursing excellence and quality patient outcomes. The Children’s Hospital is the first and only freestanding children’s hospital in San Antonio and South Texas to receive this recognition. With only eight percent of U.S. hospitals earning the Magnet designation, this is a tremendous honor, and a testament of exceptional care.

Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO) Center of Excellence

The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio achieved the highest level of recognition for its use of life-saving technology, known as Extracorporeal Membrane Oxygenation (ECMO). The Extracorporeal Life Support Organization (ELSO) presented the Gold Level ELSO Award for Excellence in Life Support to representatives from the Neonatal and the Pediatric Intensive Care Units. ECMO is a procedure that uses a machine to take over the work of the lungs and heart. The technology has been in use at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio for more than 25 years and has saved many children’s lives. The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is the only pediatric hospital in San Antonio with an ECMO program.

Silver Beacon Award for Excellence

The American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC) awarded The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio’s Pediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU) with a Silver Beacon Award for Excellence. It is the first and only PICU in Texas to receive this honor. For patients and families, the Beacon Award signifies exceptional care through improved outcomes and greater overall satisfaction. For nurses, a Beacon Award signals a positive and supportive work environment with greater collaboration between colleagues and leaders, higher morale, and lower turnover.

Baby-Friendly Recognition

After several years of implementing best practices, The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio earned the prestigious international recognition as a Baby-Friendly Hospital, becoming the first hospital in San Antonio to earn the recognition, and joining only 428 hospitals across the United States to be named a “Baby-Friendly” facility. Baby-Friendly Hospitals provide mothers with the information, confidence, and skills necessary to successfully initiate and continue breastfeeding their babies or safely feed formula, if desired. The designation proves The Children’s Hospital supports and promotes the importance of mother-baby bonding, ensuring mothers are allowed immediate skin-to-skin with their newborns. The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is also set up to support in-room care, helping to establish valuable time from the start to help a mother learn her baby’s cues and needs, which results in a smoother transition home. The hard-earned designation comes from Baby-Friendly USA, part of a global initiative by the World Health Organization and United Nations Children’s Fund, known as UNICEF.

We make it our mission to provide the best care to every child, every day, and are honored to be able to bring an unprecedented level of pediatric care to our city, thanks to generous donors like you.
