CHEF Serves Up Smiles this National Nutrition Month

#ChildrensHospitalsWeek is a great time to celebrate children’s hospitals and what makes them unique. In addition to providing the best care and pediatric services available, The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio goes above and beyond to expand programs and services in order to continue meeting the needs of our growing and changing community.  March is also National Nutrition Month, the perfect time to celebrate one of the programs that makes The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio unique: CHEF.

The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is home to the nation’s first teaching kitchen located within a freestanding hospital: the Culinary Health Education for Families (CHEF) program.

Families work together to create CHEF inspired healthy meals.

CHEF teaches children and families practical nutrition and basic cooking skills with the long-term goal of motivating individuals and communities to adopt and sustain healthier eating habits.

In 2013, Goldsbury Foundation announced the single largest gift made to The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio in its 147-year history. A portion of the grant was dedicated to create an innovative, collaborative childhood nutrition initiative. Two years later, CHEF: Culinary Health Education for Families, was born.

Chefs and dietitians work seamlessly with Children’s Hospital physicians to tackle a variety of health issues, including obesity and diabetes. Physicians and other medical providers can refer their patients to CHEF. Classes are offered for children and their families at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio campus, where families have the opportunity to learn the CHEF Recipe for Life: Cook well, eat well, live well.

The CHEF team pauses to support #ChildrensHospitalsWeek!

The CHEF team is dedicated to the health and wellness of our patients and their families. The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is proud to be a leader in tackling childhood obesity in San Antonio and South Texas. Click here for more about CHEF.
