Your Gifts Contribute to Improved Care for Expectant Mothers

Welcoming a child into the world is an incredible, beautiful experience.  Choosing where you plan to give birth, however, can feel overwhelming. For years, The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio has been the premier children’s hospital in the area, serving thousands of children annually. With the completion of the updated Mother/Baby Unit, The Children’s Hospital is setting its sights on providing the best medical care for expectant and high risk mothers to become their first choice hospital when welcoming the newest additions to their families.

“After several years of temporary homes, the new Mother/Baby Unit has found a permanent home on the 4th floor of The Children’s Hospital, and we could not be more excited,” said Rhonda Thompson, chief nursing officer, The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

The Mother/Baby Unit consists of 14 rooms laid out specifically for new mothers and their families to feel at ease during their hospital stay.

Natural light warms the newly redesigned rooms.  Plenty of seating was added into each room to ensure family and friends feel comfortable when visiting mother and child.

“When we designed the room, we relied on the Family Advisory Board, which is made up of parents of patients here at The Children’s Hospital. The family-centered theme of the room is based off feedback we received.  Each room consists of a couch and designated space for significant others, family members, and friends to visit or stay as long as they need to. There is also a designated space for the care provider, and an expanded bathroom,” said Dana Rohman, associate chief nursing officer, The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

The expansion of the unit came as a much-needed update thanks to the philanthropic efforts of generous donors like you. Fundraising is currently underway to complete further labor & delivery renovations.

The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio is the first hospital in San Antonio to offer four obstetric (OB) hospitalists available 24/7 to care for and deliver babies whenever necessary. In addition to the around-the-clock physician availability, The Children’s Hospital includes a level IV Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, the highest level of care available for premature and critically ill infants.

“Even if a mother is under the care of a private physician, and for any reason that doctor was unavailable, we will always have a physician in-house to deliver their child,” said Rohman.

“The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio’s partnership with Baylor College of Medicine’s Maternal/Fetal center has given us the ability to provide not only the best possible care for the children, but for mothers as well, added Thompson, “all under one roof.”
