Young Basketball Player Returns to the Court

When ten-year-old Holt fell and hit his knee on the hard cement, he shook off the pain and went about his day. Holt loves basketball and continued to play, despite the minor pain in his knee. However, after a couple of weeks, the pain became so severe that Holt could barely walk. His parents took him to his family physician who referred them to The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.

“The pediatric orthopedics program at The Children’s Hospital was highly recommended to us,” said Amy, Holt’s mom. “Dr. Alec Stall was amazing, and he was able to diagnose Holt with a condition called, Sinding Larsen Johansson Syndrome (SLJ).”

Children who develop SLJ experience pain as a result of an inflamed tendon between their knee cap and shin. This condition can be caused by rapid bone growth or strenuous sporting activity.

After wearing a knee brace for a couple of months and then moving to a cast, Holt’s condition did not improve. Dr. Stall decided Holt’s best option was to undergo a minor surgery to repair his knee.

“Dr. Stall took such great care of Holt,” Amy added. “I know he has several other patients, but we always felt like Holt was his first priority. We are so thankful for the high-quality care, professionalism, and personal service we received at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.”

Holt recovered from surgery and is doing well. After months sitting on the bench, he is now back on the basketball court, doing what he loves most.
