At 14 weeks in-utero, doctors noticed a serious curvature in Evan’s spine and predicted a difficult road ahead. Evan was born with a tethered spinal cord, intertwined ribs, and scoliosis. These problems inhibit the growth of the lungs and the ability to breathe.
In order to live, Evan would need to undergo surgeries to improve the condition of his spine and ribs.
“When we moved to San Antonio, we were referred to The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio because of its Titanium Rib Program,” Evan’s mother, Marisol, said. “We immediately felt comfortable at the Hospital because each physician we encountered proved to be knowledgeable, experienced, and trustworthy.”
Dr. James W. Simmons, medical director, spinal and thoracic treatment and research center and orthopedic spine surgeon at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio, performed Evan’s first titanium rib transplant.

Today, Evan is a fun, caring, and energetic six-year-old who does not limit himself. He enjoys playing sports and has recently started playing the drums.
“We will always be grateful to The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio for the incredible care Evan has received,” Marisol said. “My son has been given a brighter future thanks to the knowledge and passion of our physicians.”
