When Amanda was 23 weeks pregnant, she went in for a routine checkup with her physician and discovered that her baby’s stomach could not be seen on a sonogram.
Amanda’s doctor explained that her baby likely had esophageal atresia, a rare but serious congenital condition in which the upper esophagus is separated from the lower esophagus.
After learning that her baby would need surgery after birth, Amanda and her husband, Adam, began searching for the best pediatric surgeon they could find. They eventually found Dr. Barry Cofer at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.
Hunter was born prematurely at a San Antonio hospital in March. Dr. Cofer performed diagnostic tests and confirmed that he was suffering from esophageal atresia.
Dr. Cofer and his associate Dr. John Doski worked on Hunter’s repair surgery for more than four hours. It was a difficult and uncommon procedure, but the team was able to achieve a primary repair.
After a long and difficult journey, Hunter made a full recovery and was fully discharged from the neonatal intensive care unit (NICU) in August 2015.

Today, he is a happy and thriving one-year-old and continues to see his physicians at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio.
