Strong, Healthy Smiles For Our Children

Children with good oral hygiene are generally healthier and happier than children who have dental issues, and specialists at The Children’s Hospital of San Antonio Dental Clinic are available to help tackle cavities, tooth decay, and more, to keep patients healthy.

The Dental Clinic is the only one of its kind in the city, providing services on The Children’s Hospital campus to ensure that all children, regardless of medical condition, have strong, healthy smiles.

“We offer full pediatric dentistry services to all children,” said Jo Ramirez, registered dental assistant (RDA) and team lead in the Dental Clinic. “The services here were initially created specifically for children with special needs; children who have received treatment for cancer, have a disability, or who are medically fragile. Over time, the clinic grew to care for healthy children as well.”

The Dental Clinic serves children ages 16 and younger from across South Central Texas. Last year, more than 5,700 children received dental services in the clinic. Of these children, 1,700 were special needs and 300 had cancer diagnoses.

“Dental health has a huge impact on overall wellness,” Jo added. “We see children from near and far, from all over the state of Texas; sometimes it’s an emergency and other times families choose to drive hundreds of miles to get dental care here. We are proud to have that kind of trust from our patient families. We love what we do and we are honored to play such an important role in helping these children grow up healthy and strong.”
